Welcome to Wandsbek - let's welcome everyone together

Welcome to Wandsbek welcomes people who have often been forced to leave their home countries under difficult circumstances and have now found refuge in Hamburg. Our initiative is based at the Kulturschloss Wandsbek and is part of the supporting association Kulturzentrum Wandsbek e.V..

More than 600 residents of Wandsbek are now involved with Welcome to Wandsbek – many of them actively, as volunteers or through other forms of support. Much of our work takes place directly in the accommodation centres, but we also run numerous projects and activities at the Kulturschloss.

Outstanding Commitment

Right at the start of our work, we were delighted to receive recognition in the form of an award. In 2015, the commitment of the volunteers at the Litzowstraße refugee accommodation centre was honoured by the Hamburg Community Foundation with the ‘Connecting People – Shaping the Future’ award. The wide range of voluntary activities for the centre and the ‘Refuge and Asylum’ themed month held at the Kulturschloss were recognised by the jury as an outstanding embodiment of the guiding principle. This was particularly notable because we are not only involved in social work, but also address the root causes of flight and displacement.

What we do - our services and projects

Accompanying people to doctors, social services, the housing emergency service, the jobcentre, the Chamber of Skilled Trades, the Chamber of Commerce, housing cooperatives, health insurance providers, etc. Clarifying what the problem is and what the relevant deadlines are. This requires the use of various languages. Bringing together those seeking help and those offering it. Supporting children: a new programme offering meaningful activities in the library (German, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic), the UK Am Stadtrand playground garden project, compulsory schooling for children in Kattunbleiche, accommodation in Elfsaal (here, w2w Wolf von der Osten provides support with the website and the clowns), continuing the children’s rights project whilst also supporting cases where children’s welfare is at risk through integration projects. Careers, university studies, apprenticeships, self-employment: support with drafting CVs, application documents and business plans; support with long-term planning; accompaniment to the Jobcentre, the Chamber of Crafts and the Chamber of Commerce advice centres. Connecting people with specialists who can provide further support. Essential items for those in need: clothing, bed linen, towels, toys, hygiene products, shoes, glasses, food and drink. Currently, large distribution events are taking place at the Kulturschloss, as the tent on Hammer Straße had to be abandoned. The need is very great; people come from various cultural backgrounds, but also from Hamburg and elsewhere in Germany. Housing, homelessness: We have a partnership with the To HUUS Foundation and have involved their housing support workers in our work. In addition, we assist with liaising with the Office for Emergency Housing Assistance and support people in moving out of homelessness. Helping people to help themselves: Information is available at our stand, during consultation hours and on our website. Referral advice, for example: to Café Asyl, alraune, Fluchtpunkt, Amnesty International, Diakonie, BIM, relevant authorities, solicitors, etc. Languages currently spoken by our volunteers: Dari, Farsi, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tigrinya, Kurdish, German.

Integration projects for everyone

Peace and Welcome Festival: a colourful programme promoting peace, with plenty of activities for families Fundraising, the approval process, purchasing, marketing support, recruiting volunteers, event delivery, accounting and a factual report. Children’s disco: We’ll be setting up a cosy lounge again for those who want to take a break. In the dance hall, the stage will be illuminated with LED lights to create a real disco atmosphere. The children love being able to dance and perform on stage. Our dance instructor practises short choreographies with the kids. There will also be a ‘freeze dance’ and games such as musical chairs. Our guests come from a variety of backgrounds. Children’s theatre: We want to offer children’s theatre to everyone, regardless of how long they’ve been living here or how much money their families have. This means, for example, that even a grandmother on a small pension can treat her grandchildren to something special. That’s why we don’t charge an admission fee. In this way, very different groups come together in a relaxed setting. Clowns at parties and other events: The children are always enchanted by the clowns, who whisk them away to another world. The children really enjoy the clowns’ performances, which feature plenty of movement and music, and these always encourage them to join in. The children themselves have the chance to try things out and discover their strengths. The clowns’ visits boost the children’s well-being and self-confidence, and give them a sense of calm and strength for their everyday school life. Concert for Tolerance: Alongside music from many cultures and countries, it is important to us to also provide advice and a relaxed opportunity to get to know one another whilst enjoying delicacies from around the world at affordable prices. The current project evaluation sets the direction for each event. Thank-you event: for our volunteers. Partners: Meiendorf hilft, Hamburg Hammer Straße hilft (currently no tent), nicht schacken machen, Suppenbully, LeseLeo, Wandsbek Public Library, AWO, Bovetreff. Supporters: over 600 supporters providing financial, in-kind and time-based donations; over 100 active volunteers; over 40 partner organisations.
